Easter is an exciting time of celebration with kids! Cute outfits, family lunches, egg hunts, and baskets full of Easter candy. It’s no wonder why young children enjoy the festivities surrounding this holiday.
Fun activities are a great time of enjoyment. And as Christian families, we can add even more to this special time of year by guiding our young children to look “beyond the bunny” to what Easter is really about—Jesus!
You may be thinking—My young preschooler is not able to understand the real Easter story about the death and resurrection of Jesus from the dead. I agree, many younger preschoolers cannot fully understand this miraculous event. But something we can do with our preschoolers and older children is to emphasize how special Jesus is! This is a concept our kids hear surrounding Jesus’ birth at Christmastime, so it’s easy to continue this thought during the Easter celebration of His life.
Here are some quick reminders about Jesus for you to share with young preschoolers and children as you celebrate Easter:
- Jesus loves you, me, and everyone in the world!
- We can thank Jesus for loving us so much.
- Jesus did great miracles! He is a special person.
- We can thank God for Jesus each time we pray.
- God sent Jesus to Earth as a baby; He grew up teaching others about God.
- Jesus prayed to God. We can also pray to God.
- Jesus died for our sins (for older preschoolers–elementary ages)
- God raised Jesus from the dead (for older preschoolers–elementary ages)
- Jesus wants to be our Savior and Lord (for older preschoolers–elementary ages)
As with all things, remember to keep conversations at age-appropriate levels for best understanding—especially during this season when your family remembers the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus!
